"Hashi-Ichi's Bowl"

Hashi-Ichis Bow

Hashi-Ichi was an extremely eccentric 19th century artist who made lacquer scabbards, as well as several other kinds of lacquer items, including a small number of netsuke. Later in his life, Hashi-Ichi held a funeral for himself (after the funeral, he called himself Hashi-Ichi II.). It is said that on the day of his funeral, he gave every beggar in town a new wood begging bowl and a paper hat, both of which had Hashi-Ichi’s name on them. This netsuke is David Carlin’s tribute to Hashi-Ichi, with Daruma as one of the beggars who received one of Hashi-Ichi’s bowls. Boxwood, amber and resin inlays.
